No fluffy intro for this post because I have 2 very excited kids in the background, as we just arrived at grandpa’s house and there is a whole lot of SNOW here.
If you aren’t with your grandchildren this weekend and want to add an extra dose of meaning and fun to your connection, try one of these ideas! Skip to the last idea for something punny and sweet for your older grandchildren!
Host a Virtual Easter Egg Hunt
This one is so simple, and I promise your grandchildren will squeal with laughter.
What you need:
- Easter treats to hide. This can be chocolate eggs but even better if you can pick up some colorful plastic eggs. They will be easier to spot, and you can add a mix of candy and non-candy treats inside such as change or dollar bills, stickers, temporary tattoos, etc.
- A device where you can be mobile for the video chat such as a cell phone or tablet.
How to Play
- Just hide the eggs around your house before the call
- Schedule a video chat.
- Take your grandchild around your house and tell them to shout ‘HOPPY’ or ‘EGGY’ or ‘I am EGGcellent when they find an egg.
- Collect the eggs in a basket for them and show it to them as you go along!
- Be sure to let them know before you start that you will mail whatever they find.
It can be hard to get video chat time during a busy holiday weekend, but this can be done anytime. Even next weekend. Pitch it as a 10-minute chat to the parents so they know it will be short and sweet – and fun for everyone.
Play Bunny Says
What you need:
- Just a list of silly and fun things you will ask them to do (see below).
- You can add some extra Easter fun if you pick up some bunny ears or make yourself some bunny ears and add a bunny nose and whiskers to your face.
- You can also use a stuffed bunny or even just a picture of an Easter bunny which you can find online.
How to Play:
- This is a take on Simon Says but instead it’s Bunny Says.
- You are going to show up on the call with your bunny ears OR you hold up the stuffed bunny or photo of a bunny up to the camera.
- For little ones, don’t worry about the actual rules of Simon Says, just tell them you have a bunny who wants to see what they can do and start shouting out fun things to do such as:
- Hop like a bunny
- Hop backwards
- Hop with hands on hips,
- Pat your belly
- Clap your hands 3 times
- Wiggle your nose
- Touch your toes,
- Quack like a duck
Truly any type of action will work here. It’s a cute and fast game that you can play any time of year – because let’s be honest, although we talk a lot about bunnies at this time of year, for a 5-year old, anytime is a good time to be a bunny.
Get Punny with a text message or quick video message
Before I share this, I should tell you first that my uncle is the king of puns. This means I’ve spent a lifetime hearing puns so I’m a little obsessive about a great pun!
You can text or say these to both younger or older grandchildren or even to the parents. These puns are a way to be silly and to have another playful connection touchpoint:
Hi! Just wanted you to know….
-
I carrot a lot about you
-
I think you are eggcellent because…
-
Somebunny loves you/misses you/is proud of you/loves spending time with you/thinks you are special because/thinks you are an amazing parent because (look at this blog for some positive things to share with your grandchild’s parents)
I also saw this question online somewhere and have been asking everyone I know for their answer.
Which do you eat first on a chocolate bunny, ears or feet?
Not sure what it tells me about a person but so far everyone – including an 8 and 4 -year old – take a solid moment to consider their answer.
Hoppy Connecting!
