Hi – I’m Kerry Byrne, PhD and I’m the founder of this wonderful resource called The Long Distance Grandparent.
I’m a dedicated researcher who’s studied aging and care for over 20 years AND I’m also a mum of two lively kids who live at distance from their grandparents. So, I get it. I really do.
Grandparents matter
Over the course of my career, I’ve seen so much evidence for the role that grandparents play in creating a more compassionate society. Having strong, loving bonds between grandparents and their grandchildren brings benefits way beyond family dynamics. Grandparents really do matter.
Grandparenting at distance is totally doable
When we first moved to Dubai, we found the distance really tough – not just for our kids and their grandparents but for all of us.
So, I started using everything in my toolbox to bridge the distance. As a parent, I saw what worked with my children. And as a researcher, I made sure my ideas weren’t just fun and creative but also evidence-backed and age-appropriate. It took time and effort to nurture those relationships, I’ll tell you. There’s no quick fix. But it worked. And, even though we’re now back in the same country, we’re still living miles apart and my kids and their grandparents still have a great relationship. We’re proof that it really is possible!
In 2019, I set up The Long Distance Grandparent to support the millions of long distance grandparents out there, who also want to build strong, loving bonds with their grandkids and to help create a more compassionate society for all of us.
I have a vision of a world where distance doesn’t have to mean distant and it’s a vision I’m committed to achieving. I’ve worked with hundreds of grandparents just like you and I’m so proud that some of my founding members are still with me and that their experiences of what’s worked for them (and what hasn’t) are now wrapped into the vast wealth of resources that TLDG now has to offer.
