We see how hard you're trying

trying to wrap your heart around what it is to be a long distance grandparent, trying to wrap your head around how to make the whole thing work.

We don't sugar coat it.
We say how it is.

We know that every grandparent is different and that every family context has its own challenges. We understand that you may need different types of support at different times.

And it’s ok. We’re here regardless. Here for ALL of it.

Wherever you are in your journey, you can rely on The Long Distance Grandparent to give you a trusted single source of support that is not only evidence-backed, relatable & adaptable to different circumstances but also sense-checked and peer-tested (so we know it really works).

Meet Kerry

Hi – I’m Kerry Byrne, PhD and I’m the founder of this wonderful resource called The Long Distance Grandparent.

I’m Kerry and over the past five years, I’ve developed tons of research-backed, tried-and-tested strategies to help families nurture strong and lasting connections.  I’ve also spent the last decade making sure my own kids have meaningful relationships with their family, all from a distance. Over the years, I’ve supported thousands of long-distance grandparents, many of whom have told me how much they appreciate hearing insights “from the other side.”

I bring two sides to the table: I’m a researcher with over 20 years of experience studying aging and caregiving, and I’m also a mum of two energetic kids who know and love their grandparents – but have always lived at a distance from them.

Grandparenting at distance is hard - but it's possible

As a parent, I know that maintaining strong family bonds requires fun and creative approaches. As a researcher, I understand the importance of using evidence-based, age-appropriate strategies. It takes time and effort to nurture these relationships, but it’s absolutely worth it.

I’ve helped so many grandparents build meaningful connections with their grandchildren and adult children—and I know I can help you too.

Take a peek through the blog and resources I offer and be sure to sign up for my weekly tips and inspirations designed especially for long distance grandparents at the bottom of this page!
